SEA. SALT.
SEA. SALT. Was shot durring a small trip to Penzance in the duration of this project I went out numerous times to shoot the harbour and dock area of Penzance. As soon as got there I knew what sort of project I wished to undertake as Penzance was obviously even at the first glance a faded beauty and so I decided that should be the premise of this project.

All around when you visit penzance are small details and relics owing to a more rich and successful history than is currently obvious today. it was those details that I found myself interested in and make up the main body of work. I went out on a total of five shoots while in penzance this allowed me to explore the harbour area properly and find what I really wanted to shoot rather than rushing to shoot as much as possible in one shoot and then trawl through it later.

I decided to process the images to have and extremely saturated look making them burst with colour. This is so significant as the bright colour is almost juxtaposed with the faded decay that is pictured makes the images more powerful and striking to the viewer. I did this in two ways, firstly I shot with a fast shutter speed and stopped down the apature, this created darker more contrasty images than I would otherwise have had. Secondly when processing the images I boosted the contrast, brightness and vibrance to really make the colour in the images pop giving me the effect that I desired.

This project takes some obvious influence from James & Klara Murray's Storefront, documenting a similar slip into disrepair and eventual disappearance of something that was once so strong in society. And what beter than the costal town? A British staple for most of the 20th century this is not the "sea side" town that we have in our minds eye when we think of the coast.

This project is not just solely a documentation of Penzance's faded glory, it is a tale of how years of battering by the sea has taken its tole. And it is not just Penzance but many of our coastal towns that are falling into disrepair, crumbling around the few residents that still live there and being neglected by the rest of society.
